Thyroid Care

Thyroid care at AgeWell looks at your full thyroid panel alongside your symptoms and the rest of your health. We treat hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's in men and women, with the thyroid medication that fits you.

Why the thyroid matters in midlife

Your thyroid helps set the pace for energy, metabolism, body temperature, mood, and thinking. When it slows down, you may notice tiredness, weight changes, feeling cold, brain fog, low mood, dry skin, or thinning hair. Many of those signs overlap with perimenopause, menopause, and low testosterone, so we look at your thyroid alongside your other hormones.

What we test

At your first visit, we check a full thyroid panel:

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid antibodies, which can point to Hashimoto's

If you take thyroid medication, follow-up labs usually include TSH, free T4, and free T3. We recheck reverse T3 and antibodies when they're needed.

Labs are one part of the picture

We never decide on treatment from labs alone. Your provider puts your symptoms together with your labs, data from wearables, and the rest of your health. Normal is not the same as good. Results in the normal range don't always match how you feel, and when that happens, your provider may still consider treatment.

What we treat

  • Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis

For an overactive thyroid, thyroid nodules, or thyroid cancer, we refer you to an endocrinologist.

Treatment options

Thyroid medication comes in several forms, and we choose with you based on what you need and what you prefer. Options include levothyroxine (T4), liothyronine (T3), desiccated thyroid such as Armour or NP Thyroid, compounded T4 and T3, and more.

For some patients with Hashimoto's, we also use low-dose naltrexone (LDN). LDN is prescribed off-label for this, a common and accepted practice in medicine, and your provider will talk through whether it fits you.

Common questions

My labs are normal, but I still don't feel right. Can you help?

We'll look closer. Your provider reviews your full thyroid panel, your symptoms, and the rest of your health together. Normal labs don't always mean you feel well, and your provider may still consider treatment.

I already take thyroid medication. Can I switch to a different kind?

Possibly. We prescribe several forms of thyroid medication, and your provider will talk through what fits your labs, your symptoms, and your preferences.

Will you work with my primary care doctor or endocrinologist?

Yes. We work alongside your other doctors when it's needed or when you'd like us to.

Do you treat an overactive thyroid?

No. For an overactive thyroid, thyroid nodules, or thyroid cancer, we refer you to an endocrinologist.
